Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

The era when short-drama apps were a niche curiosity passed some time ago. Sensor Tower recorded about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US produced 49% of it. The playdrama quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Q1 2026, while the full year of 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has met at least one of the five names that drive the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they seem identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch hinge on how they differ underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. Across six rounds, we named a winner each time, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Head-to-Head Grid

This grid puts the whole field on one screen before the rounds begin. All prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they differ by country, platform and promotion. The install numbers are drawn from each app’s Google Play listing. The market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Where a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. The grid serves as the scoreboard, and the rounds below are the commentary.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are

ReelShort, the incumbent, still holds the most weight. Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and supported by China’s COL Group, launched it in August 2022, and MPA gives it about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also estimates its 2025 revenue at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Singapore’s StoryMatrix runs DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. Although DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. With 5M+ Android installs, My Drama is the minnow, yet it is the only one that has Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. GoodShort, for context, holds about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on the strength of market share.

Round 2: Pricing

The apps seem most alike in this round. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all offer an automatically renewing weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store. ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, while DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. DramaBox takes a different route: auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass cost about $80, and that means a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. As prices change by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may differ. The winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Viewing Options

The marketing turns loud and the details get thin when it comes to free viewing. ReelShort’s own blog says the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Paid coins do not expire, but free reward coins usually do, and a seven-day check-in streak brings 100+ of them. ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so avoid them. Free options exist on DramaBox too, though its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. The winner: ReelShort, by a clear margin.

Round 4: Screens and Platforms

Real differences show up on screens, where these apps genuinely part ways. Besides iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, and progress syncs across devices. As for DramaBox, the website mostly points you back to the app, whereas DramaWave is verified only on its iOS and Android apps. Since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. My Drama plays the trump card, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. If all you need is a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, although My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

ShortMax is untouchable on raw numbers. More than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets had been produced by the company behind ShortTV as of January 2024 (most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations), and the app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. DramaWave claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and reports say more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, give ReelShort the edge on recognizable hits, and both of them went viral in November 2023. DramaBox responds with an LA production team and originals like Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama has the most intriguing pipeline, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, thanks to sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

This round belongs to DramaWave by a distance. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video are promised in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync ranks as the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. The fine print deserves a look too, because it varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Winner: DramaWave, with room to spare.

Best For: Our Final Picks

How you watch decides the right choice, since no single short drama app takes every round. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. For Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Best for sheer volume is ShortMax, whose claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. For commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. If you want to back the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. When it comes to free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort wins again, thanks to its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Tempted by all five? Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
